Living alone with her two beloved cats, Tiger and Bella, she cherishes the simple joys of gardening and music while navigating the challenges of life without health insurance. Years ago, Nancy was working full-time while balancing her career with being a devoted mother to her two incredible children. But life took a turn when Nancy’s husband fell seriously ill, requiring her full-time care. Around the same time, her aging mother needed her help too. Forced to leave her job, Nancy found herself caught in a difficult choice: care for her family or keep her health insurance. She chose her family. The decision to leave a career she loved wasn’t easy.

Nancy has applied for Medicaid multiple times, only to face rejection. Wyoming’s lack of Medicaid expansion left her and many others in impossible situations. “It’s not about wanting free healthcare,” Nancy explains. “Sometimes, it’s a choice you have to make. My mom and husband were more important.”

Amid her struggles, the Downtown Clinic became a lifeline. For over a decade, it has been the one place Nancy could count on for medical care. When she was managing multiple health challenges, the clinic provided the medications and support she needed to stay afloat. “Thank God for the Downtown Clinic,” she says. “I don’t know what I would have done otherwise.”

Beyond her personal struggles, Nancy has become an advocate for change. “Lawmakers need to stop and think about what they’d do in my position,” she stated. “The last job I had, I really loved, but I had to choose to take care of my family.” Without Medicaid expansion, countless individuals in Wyoming are left without options, falling through the cracks.
